We are a primary special school based in central Gateshead. The post holder will be required to learn and be given training in the required skills and responsibilities of a Teaching Apprentice over the term of the apprenticeship to then be able to undertake the full range of duties listed below at the conclusion of the apprenticeship.
Role and responsibilities
- Work with pupils with special educational needs.
- To follow safeguarding procedures and ensure the well-being of all children.
- Establishing good relationships with pupils encouraging them to interact with others and engage in activities whilst being aware of individual needs.
- Work with individuals or small groups of pupils in the classroom under the direct supervision of teaching staff and provide feedback by annotating children’s work and verbally to the teacher.
- Support pupils in using basic ICT.
- Support pupils to understand instructions, support independent learning and inclusion of all pupils; promoting the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils.
- Supporting the teacher in managing pupil behaviour, reporting difficulties/ progress / achievements as appropriate.
- Support pupils with social and emotional well-being, reporting to the teacher as appropriate.
- Assist pupils with eating, dressing and hygiene, as required, whilst encouraging independence.
- Prepare and clear up learning environment and resources, including photocopying, filing and the display and presentation of pupils work and contribute to maintaining a safe environment.
- Use online systems to record information – behaviour/ safeguarding/ accidents.
- Attend and participate in regular meetings.
- Teaching Assistants in this role may also undertake some or all of the following:
- Contribute to assessment discussions within the class team, contributing knowledge of progress within individual children.
- Support children’s learning through play, in the classroom and on the yard; facilitating social interaction with peers.
- Assist with break-time and lunchtime supervision including behaviour management.
- Assist with escorting pupils on educational visits and on transport.
- Contributing to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school through positive approaches to all aspects of school life.
- Establishing constructive relationships and communicate with other agencies/professionals, in liaison with the teacher, to support achievement and progress of pupils.
- Facilitate medical support daily and administer medication, if required, under the direction and supervision of a Teaching Assistant Level 3 or above.
