Level 2 Health and Social Care Foundation Apprenticeship
REQUIREMENTS
- Apprentices must normally be aged 16–21 at the start of the apprenticeship (exceptions apply in line with Department for Education funding rules).
- Minimum duration of 8 months.
- 'Off the job' training must be provided (187 hours).
- Support from an employment mentor with regular progress reviews.
- Apprentices must meet the required knowledge, skills, employability behaviours and English and Maths requirements in line with apprenticeship funding rules.
CONTENT
- Develop the knowledge and skills required to work within a range of health and social care settings, including hospitals, care homes, GP practices, community teams and individuals' homes.
- Provide compassionate, person-centred care and support that promotes dignity, independence and wellbeing.
- Understand equality, diversity, inclusion, human rights, safeguarding and duty of care.
- Apply infection prevention and control, health promotion, food hygiene and safe moving and handling practices.
- Support individuals with a range of physical, mental health and emotional wellbeing needs.
- Use digital systems and technology appropriately while maintaining professional boundaries.
- Develop resilience, communication and teamwork skills to work effectively alongside health and social care professionals.
- Gain an understanding of career pathways and progression opportunities across the health and social care sector.
ASSESSMENT METHODS
- Workplace and tutor progress reviews.
- Knowledge tests set by the Assessment Organisation.
- Practical assessments which may include:
- Workplace observation.
- Practical tasks or simulated activities.
- Projects or presentations.
- Portfolio of evidence.
- Ongoing demonstration of employability skills and behaviours throughout the programme.
APPRENTICESHIP ASSESSMENT
Assessment takes place throughout the apprenticeship and will normally include:

- Knowledge Test.
- Practical Assessment demonstrating the application of health and social care knowledge and skills.
- Confirmation from the employer that employability skills and behaviours have been consistently demonstrated throughout the programme before completion.
